Replacing your roof is probably the biggest investment you can make as a home owner.

It's important you know the costs and benefits of each option so you can make an informed decision. We, as an expert roofing company working in Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire are here to help you get it right.

Firstly, you need to consider the pitch of your roof and what's suitable for it, the weather conditions around your home, the structure of your roof support, and your budget. It's worth looking at your street and thinking about how any new roof would fit into it, and what you would find aesthetically pleasing.

Then, check into local planning and building regulation rules. If you live in a conservation area, for example, you may well have to replace like with like when repairing or replacing your roof.

The rules are obviously far stricter for Grade II, Grade II* and Grade I listed buildings.

If you do have the choice between materials, here is our guide to choosing the best roofing tile options for you:

Slate

The benefits of slate roofing: It's a water-resistant, natural material which looks wonderful on any roof. Natural slates are able to withstand temperature changes, they require little maintenance, and can last up to 100 years. There is also the option of slate roof tiles, as opposed to larger slates, which may be a better choice for your project.

Tiles cost: From £1.02 per tile for Spanish slate tiles to £13.44 plus VAT for a top quality Welsh slate.

Clay tiles

The benefits of clay tiles: They are attractive, long-lasting, and available in a range of colours and styles. They are weather and fire-resistant. They do require some maintenance.

Tiles cost: From 34p plus VAT per tile, to £2.72 plus VAT for handmade tiles. The price depends on style, colour, and thickness.

Concrete tiles

The benefits of concrete tiles: They are durable and require little maintenance, though they do need a sturdy support structure in a roof. If you have the impression they are all less attractive than slate or clay tiles, think again. We supply options in a range of colours.

Tiles cost: From 32p plus VAT to £2.75 plus VAT per tile, depending on style and colour.

When you're budgeting for your new roof, don't forget to include the price of extras like leading, and roof capping tiles, in your materials budget.
